Letter Art is an ancient form of art from the Korean Peninsula. Although originally from China as “Long Feng Zhi”, the Koreans adopted and changed the style by using strips of leather to create characters with representational meanings. The Korean “Hyuk Pil” Art form provides these images that are translated into meanings such as Bamboo for Honesty or Bird for Good Luck. The images are presented with a smooth texture in a variety of colors for a fluid appearance. Modernly, this art form is used world wide to generate an array of names such as “Welcome”, “Love” or “Peace” and many custom proper names such as “Christine” or “Andrew”. These names are created from an array of images and symbols in flowering and colorful graphics to express the variety and force of nature while still maintaining the Hyuk Pil philosophy. Using strips of hand crafted leather Pia’s artistic skill brings to life these names or special request that are created using the many different symbols and letters. These letters are adorned and portrayed using an array of plants, animals, birds and sunsets. Hyuk Pil is an art that interprets human activity through nature.
